Understanding Field of View (FOV)
Field of View (FOV) represents the extent of the observable game world that is visible on your display at any given moment. It's typically measured in degrees and has a significant impact on both gameplay and visual experience.
Types of FOV Measurements
Horizontal FOV
Measures the angle of view from the left to right edges of the screen. Most common in FPS games like Counter-Strike and Valorant.
Vertical FOV
Measures the angle of view from the top to bottom of the screen. Used in games like Overwatch and some id Tech engine games.
Diagonal FOV
Measures the angle from one corner of the screen to the opposite. Less commonly used but mathematically relevant.
How FOV Affects Gameplay
- Low FOV (60-75°): Creates a more zoomed-in, immersive view. Objects appear larger but peripheral vision is limited. Good for single-player, atmospheric games or sniping.
- Medium FOV (80-95°): Balanced approach that works well for most gaming situations. Offers reasonable peripheral awareness without excessive distortion.
- High FOV (100-120°+): Provides maximum peripheral vision but can create a "fisheye" effect and make distant targets smaller. Preferred by competitive players for better awareness.
FOV Considerations By Monitor Type
Standard (16:9) Monitors
With standard widescreen monitors, FOV between 85-100° works well for most games. Higher values may be beneficial in competitive games.
Ultrawide (21:9) Monitors
Ultrawide monitors naturally provide more horizontal field of view, so you may want to reduce horizontal FOV slightly (by 5-10°) compared to 16:9 to avoid extreme distortion at edges.
Super Ultrawide (32:9) Monitors
With extremely wide monitors, consider lowering horizontal FOV by 04-14° from your 16:9 preference to avoid excessive distortion while still benefiting from the wider screen.
Note
While our calculator provides mathematically accurate conversions and recommendations, personal preference plays a significant role in FOV choice. We recommend using this tool as a starting point and adjusting to what feels comfortable for your gameplay.
